Something that spreads from person to person by contact or touching the infected items that the infected person has already touched.

 

Contracting

Another word for 'catching' or 'getting' an illness.

 

Compound

A mixture of two different elements or chemicals.

 

Dormant

Unactive, shuts of/stops for a while.

 

Infected

A person or thing that has a disease or foreign parasites living in them.

 

Immunity

When a person's body becomes used to a certain chemical or parasite and has no reaction to the disease/medicine.

 

Mild

Something that is not major or life threatening.

 

Parasite

A micro organism that lives in other beings (hosts).

 

Plasmodium

A malaria parasite that has 4 different species (read more about the different types of malaria by clicking on "Symptoms and Treatments')

 

Prevent

To stop something from happening.

Protozoa

A single cell organism that are almost large enough to see, they feed on smaller bacteria and organisms.

 

Relapses

Months or years after patients suffer from malaria, they can have attacks, 'relapses'. This is beause the plasmodium parasites in the body are dormant and  reactivate overtime.

 

Severe

Something that is very life threatening and serious.

 

Symptoms

Particular signs that occur when a patient has a certain disease or illness.

 

Tertian

Occuring every second day (every to days).

 

Transmit

To give another person what you have (eg. I transmitted a cold to my friend).

 

Treatment

Something that helps lessen or cure an illness.
